vanilla orchid Origin: Originally grown in Mexico, vanilla is now cultivated in Madagascar, Mexico, Tonga, French Polynesia, Fiji, Costa Rica, Uganda, India, and China.
Description: Vanilla beans grow on vanilla vines and come from the pollination of vanilla flowers. Vanilla beans are long and thin and are green until they are fermented and then turn brown. The bean itself or an extract of the bean is used in cooking.
Applications: Vanilla is used in a wide variety of cuisines, most commonly in breads, sweets, and desserts.
